Maruti Suzuki, a long-standing leader in car sales within India, has further strengthened its position by emerging as the leading SUV manufacturer in the country, surpassing Mahindra. With a history of offering well-received vehicles, Maruti Suzuki has now achieved a significant milestone. The brand’s success is attributed to its popular SUV models such as Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, and the recently introduced Jimny. These models have propelled Maruti Suzuki to surpass rivals Tata and Mahindra in sales, making it the top SUV player in the Indian market as of July 2023. This development marks a noteworthy transformation in India’s automotive sector.
Maruti Suzuki’s SUV Sales Surge 167% in June
According to recent reports, Maruti Suzuki achieved a remarkable feat by selling 42,620 SUVs in India during July 2023, marking a remarkable 167% year-on-year growth. In contrast, Mahindra recorded sales of 36,124 units during the same period. Maruti’s impressive performance in July can be attributed to the consistent demand for models like Brezza, Fronx, and Grand Vitara, further boosted by the Nexa channel, which attracts buyers from higher segments. Nexa, known for offering vehicles like Jimny, Invicto, S-Cross, and XL6, has contributed significantly to Maruti’s success. The substantial increase in demand has resulted in an order book of over 110,000 units for Maruti Suzuki’s SUVs.
Over the period of April to July 2023, Maruti Suzuki sold approximately 135,246 SUVs, while Mahindra & Mahindra achieved sales of 136,174 units. The ongoing trend suggests that Maruti Suzuki is poised to further widen the lead by the end of August 2023. The company’s premium sales channel, Nexa, has performed exceptionally well in terms of monthly sales, having achieved sales of around 184,200 units in the initial four months of the current fiscal year. In comparison, Hyundai Motor India recorded sales of 199,000 units.
Ramping Up Production: A Checklist for Success
The company is determined to surpass its already impressive figures and is strategically concentrating on enhancing its production capabilities within the SUV segment. Shashank Srivastava, the Senior Executive Director of Maruti Suzuki, emphasized that the “demand environment remains positive.” The recent launches of new SUVs have already yielded favorable outcomes for the brand, and this growth trajectory is projected to continue during the forthcoming festive season. Maruti Suzuki has effectively established its stronghold in the SUV segment ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.
