Tata Motors’ Sales Growth Stalls in July, YoY and MoM Growth Marginal

Tata Motors, one of India’s leading automakers, recently released its sales report for July 2023, showing a marginal YoY growth of just 0.26 percent in passenger vehicle sales. The company sold a total of 47,628 units in this segment during the mentioned month.

However, the overall picture for Tata Motors was not as positive, as the total sales (including passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles) witnessed a de-growth. In July 2023, Tata Motors recorded 80,633 units sold, which was down by 1.4 percent compared to the 81,790 units sold in the same month in 2022. This decline indicates a challenging market environment for the automaker during that period.

In July 2023, Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle sales showed marginal growth with just a 0.26 percent year-on-year increase, reaching 47,628 units compared to 47,505 units sold in July 2022. The month-on-month sales also improved by 0.83 percent, resulting in a volume growth of 393 units from June 2023’s sales of 47,235 units.

However, the exports of passenger vehicles saw a significant decline of 53 percent, with only 61 units shipped in July 2023, down from 131 units in July 2022. Despite this, the total sales of passenger vehicles, including electric vehicles, remained flat on a year-on-year basis, standing at 47,689 units, similar to the 47,636 units sold in July 2022.

The total domestic sales in July 2023 decreased slightly to 78,844 units, compared to 78,978 units sold in July 2022. In contrast, Tata Motors’ electric vehicle lineup experienced notable growth, with combined sales (domestic + exports) increasing by 53 percent to 6,329 units in July 2023, up from 4,151 units sold in July 2022.

Tata Motors Commercial Vehicle Sales July 2023

In July 2023, Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle segment experienced a 4 percent decline in sales, with 32,944 units sold, down from 34,154 units in July 2022. Within this segment, the Heavy Commercial Vehicle (HCV) category performed well, achieving a 14 percent year-on-year growth with 8,504 units sold in July 2023, compared to 7,473 units in July 2022. However, the Intermediate and Light Commercial Vehicle (ILMCV) Trucks faced an 11 percent year-on-year decline, selling 4,899 units in July 2023, down from 5,524 units in July 2022.

On the other hand, the Passenger Carrier sales in the commercial vehicle segment demonstrated a significant improvement, showing a 24 percent year-on-year growth with 4,292 units sold in July 2023, up from 3,454 units in July 2022. However, the Small Commercial Vehicle (SCV) cargo and pickup sales experienced a 10 percent year-on-year de-growth, declining to 12,523 units in July 2023 from 15,022 units sold in July 2022.

Overall, the total domestic sales in the commercial vehicle segment reached 31,216 units in July 2023, which indicated a 1 percent year-on-year de-growth compared to the 31,473 units sold in July 2022. Additionally, commercial vehicle exports also faced a significant decline of 36 percent, with 1,728 units sold in July 2023, down from 2,681 units sold in July 2022.

Upcoming launches

Tata Motors is gearing up to witness a substantial increase in sales with the introduction of six new SUVs in the near future. Among the upcoming launches are the Nexon facelift and the Punch CNG facelift. The Punch CNG will become Tata Motors’ fourth product to feature a factory-fitted CNG kit, following the Tiago, Tigor, and Altroz.

Additionally, Tata Motors has plans to offer facelifts for its Harrier and Safari models, further enhancing their appeal in the market. Moreover, the company is set to introduce the Nexon EV facelift and the Punch EV, adding more electric vehicle options to its portfolio.

With these exciting new offerings, Tata Motors is poised to strengthen its position in the SUV segment and cater to the evolving demands of consumers, providing them with an array of choices across conventional and electric-powered SUVs.
