According to reports, Mahindra is preparing to surprise the automotive world by unveiling an all-electric concept of its popular lifestyle off-roader, the Thar. The much-anticipated Mahindra Thar Electric concept will be showcased at a public event on August 15th, taking place in South Africa. This marks the second concept vehicle from Mahindra, following the previously introduced double-cab pickup concept based on the well-received Scorpio-N SUV.
Clarifying recent speculations, Mahindra has officially confirmed that the five-door version of the Thar will not be revealed on August 15th. Instead, all the focus will be on the electric concept of the Thar, which is expected to feature a standard four-wheel-drive setup. Reports suggest that Mahindra is likely to retain the basic ladder-on-frame chassis and maintain the three-door layout for this new electric concept.
Regarding the electric powertrain, it is speculated that the Mahindra Thar Electric concept might adopt a quad-motor setup, with one motor mounted on each wheel. This arrangement could potentially enable impressive features like the crab-walk ability, similar to the Hummer EV. While specific details about the powertrain have not been officially disclosed, Mahindra showcased five different born-electric concepts last year, none of which featured a ladder-on-frame construction.
The robustness and durability of the Mahindra Thar are largely attributed to its strong ladder-on-frame chassis, which tends to be heavier compared to monocoque frames found in similarly-sized compact SUVs. In the past, battery packaging and placement were considered challenges for ladder-on-frame SUVs, but this concern has been disproven by the success of ladder-on-frame four-wheel-drive EVs, such as the Ford F-150 Lightning. As such, the Mahindra Thar Electric concept holds promising potential to combine ruggedness with sustainable electric mobility solutions.
Only XUV 400 EV in the Portfolio
Details about the powertrain setup for the Mahindra Thar Electric concept remain uncertain at this point. Currently, Mahindra’s only electric vehicle is the XUV400, which features a single motor setup producing 147.5 bhp of power and 310 Nm of torque. The top-end variant of the XUV400 comes with a 39.4 kWh battery pack, offering a claimed maximum driving range of 456 km.
Although the Mahindra Thar Electric concept is still in its early stages and far from being production-ready, Mahindra is known for its rigorous testing processes before introducing vehicles to the market. As of now, the production timeline for the Thar Electric has not been officially disclosed. More information about the concept’s powertrain and other specifications is anticipated to be unveiled during the upcoming concept’s showcase on August 15th.
Scorpio-N Pick-up to be Unveiled Soon!
Mahindra has recently teased the visual of the Global Pik Up Vision, a concept pickup vehicle based on the Mahindra Scorpio-N. With the codename Z121, this upcoming vehicle will share its platform with the Scorpio-N but will be distinctly different from the Scorpio Getaway, similar to the variation between the Scorpio-N and the Scorpio Classic. The current version of the Mahindra Scorpio Getaway, known as the Mahindra Pik Up in Australia, features a longer wheelbase compared to the Scorpio Classic. The teaser release on Mahindra’s social media handles has created anticipation for this concept pickup, and more details are expected to be revealed soon.
