2024 BMW X5

2024 BMW X5 Price, Colours, Mileage, Top Speed, Specs and More

While the 2024 BMW X5 may not deliver the same level of driving enjoyment as the Porsche Cayenne, nor match the seamless elegance of the Genesis GV80, it adeptly melds attributes from both to craft a harmonious and notably luxurious middle ground. Right from the start, the X5 presents itself as a model aspiring for widespread appeal. This sentiment is underscored by BMW’s decision to offer the vehicle with an array of three distinct powertrains: a silky-smooth inline-six, a commanding twin-turbo V-8, and an environmentally conscious plug-in hybrid.

The SUV’s interior exudes opulence, featuring premium materials that envelop the cabin. A hallmark of BMW, the X5 seamlessly integrates advanced technology features, such as a sleek curved digital display extending nearly the entire length of the dashboard. This design philosophy culminates in a luxury SUV of remarkable balance, its minor limitations easily overshadowed by its strengths. As a result, the X5 retains its position as one of our favored choices among mid-size crossovers.

What’s New for 2024?

For the 2024 model year, BMW has introduced refined enhancements to the X5’s exterior. Notable updates encompass a redesigned front grille and bumper, fresh headlamps and taillamps, as well as updated wheel designs. The high-tier M60i variant boasts gloss-black exterior accents, quad tailpipes, and a prominent M logo embedded within the grille.

Both the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engines have been fortified with a novel 48-volt hybrid system. Further enhancements have been applied to the six-cylinder engine, elevating its output to an impressive 375 horsepower. Despite the name change from M50i to M60i, the performance-driven iteration maintains its horsepower figure at a robust 523.

In place of last year’s xDrive45e plug-in hybrid model, the new and more potent xDrive50e takes the reins. This variant boasts a substantial increase of 94 horsepower and extends the electric-only driving range by 10 miles, resulting in a total output of 483 horsepower and an electric range of 40 miles.

A fresh curved infotainment display graces all X5 models, complemented by BMW’s latest iDrive 8 software interface. An impending update to iDrive 8.5 is also on the horizon, set to be introduced during the summer of 2023. Additionally, the X5 now offers the Highway Assistant hands-free driving feature, which made its debut in BMW’s flagship luxury sedan, the new 7-series.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2024 X5 presents a selection of three distinct powertrains, each corresponding to a specific model designation. Models bearing the sDrive40i or xDrive40i badges derive their propulsion from a potent 375-horsepower turbocharged inline-six. In a previous test of the xDrive40i variant, it delivered 335 horsepower and achieved a swift 4.8-second sprint to 60 mph. With the increased horsepower in the new version, even livelier acceleration is anticipated.

The plug-in hybrid xDrive50e configuration combines a turbocharged inline-six engine with an electric motor, synergizing to produce an impressive total output of 483 horsepower. Meanwhile, the performance-driven M60i boasts a robust 523-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 engine, propelling it from 0 to 60 mph in a rapid 3.9 seconds. All three powertrains harmonize with an eight-speed automatic transmission, ensuring ample power reserves for diverse driving scenarios.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

Equipped with a standard 25.7-kWh battery pack, the xDrive50e variant of the X5 boasts an electric-only driving range of approximately 40 miles, as stated by BMW. This electric range enables the X5 to reach speeds of up to 84 mph without engaging the gasoline engine. Charging the battery pack is a convenient process, with options for home charging available through both 110-volt and 220-volt outlets, in addition to compatibility with public charging stations.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

While the EPA has not yet disclosed fuel economy ratings for the plug-in hybrid xDrive50e, the sDrive40i with rear-wheel drive and the xDrive40i with all-wheel drive are both rated at 23 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. The M60i, featuring a V-8 powerplant, is anticipated to achieve 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. As part of our assessment, we will subject the 2024 X5 to our rigorous 75-mph highway fuel economy test route, and we will subsequently provide an update to this narrative with the obtained results.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The interior of the X5 is notably spacious, accommodating adults comfortably in both the front and second rows. While an optional third row is available, it is best suited for children. Upon entering, occupants are treated to a cabin adorned with premium materials, an abundance of device charging points, and a range of luxury features that vary based on chosen options. Standard amenities encompass power-adjustable front seats with memory settings for the driver. Across all models, a power-adjustable steering column, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power rear liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and customizable ambient lighting are included.

For an even more luxurious experience, enhancements such as massaging seats, remote start, soft-close doors, acoustic glass, a leather dashboard, and heated front armrests and steering wheel can elevate the X5 to the realm of a premium luxury SUV, albeit with an additional cost. Speaking of premium options, buyers can opt for a Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound audio system featuring diamond-domed tweeters.

The X5 also excels in cargo space, providing ample room for belongings. When the rear seats are in use, we managed to accommodate 11 carry-on suitcases behind the second row. Folding the rear seats—achievable from either the side or the rear of the SUV—creates space for 26 cases. The GLE-class achieved a comparable outcome, matching the X5’s cargo capacity case for case; however, the ease of stowing its rear seats falls short compared to the X5.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Upon entering the X5’s interior, you are greeted by an expansive curved panel of display screens encompassing two-thirds of the dashboard. Positioned behind the steering wheel is a 12.3-inch screen serving as a gauge display, while a more substantial 14.9-inch touchscreen offers access to BMW’s iDrive infotainment system. Although the X5 initially debuted with iDrive 8, a complimentary over-the-air update to iDrive 8.5 is set to be rolled out in the summer of 2023. System control can also be managed through a rotary knob positioned on the center console. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard features, along with a wireless smartphone charging pad and a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot.
