Rolls-Royce Unveils Coachbuilt Droptail, Limited to Just 4 Units

Allegedly priced at approximately $25 million each, the Rolls-Royce Coachbuild division has recently introduced its latest creation during the Monterey Car Week: the exclusive Droptail. With only four units produced globally, the debut vehicle unveiled in California bears the name La Rose Noire.

Drawing inspiration from the Black Baccara, a French rose cherished by the family matriarch who commissioned the vehicle, the La Rose Noire Droptail boasts a distinctive red hue that shifts to an almost-black shade in the shadows but reveals a radiant pearlescent red sheen under sunlight. Rolls-Royce achieved this unique paint by blending two shades of red dubbed “True Love” and “Mystery.”

Rolls-Royce Unveils Coachbuilt Droptail

In contrast to the Rolls-Royce Sweptail and Boat Tail, which share the Architecture of Luxury platform with models like Cullinan, Ghost, and Phantom, the Droptail features an original monocoque chassis constructed from a mix of steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber. Despite the new underpinnings, the vehicle is equipped with the marque’s 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine generating 593 horsepower and 620 lb-ft (840 Nm) of torque. Although not focused on pure acceleration, the Droptail can reportedly accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 5.0 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

The Droptail‘s design sets it apart from other Rolls-Royce models. A conventional chrome grille and sleek LED headlights adorn the front, while the bodywork showcases fluid lines along the sides, tapering toward a rear marked by distinctive taillights. The car also sports a stylish spoiler, eye-catching decklid, and even a detachable carbon fiber roof panel with electrochromic panels.

Described as the most remarkable aspect of the vehicle, the interior of the Droptail was a two-year endeavor in intricate craftsmanship. It features elaborate artwork resembling falling rose petals, created from 1,603 pieces of black wood veneer. The seats are adorned with a combination of True Love red and Mystery red leather. The centerpiece of the dashboard is a custom 43mm chronograph by Audemars Piguet with red counters, inner bezel, and a flying chronograph. Interestingly, this timepiece can be detached and worn on a strap with the press of a button.

Adding to the opulence, the family behind the car’s commission also requested a bespoke Rolls-Royce Champagne Chest to match. This chest, activated by a button, includes hand-blown crystal champagne flutes and a serving tray.

Although Rolls-Royce has not officially disclosed the price of each of the four Droptail models, sources suggest an approximate cost of $25 million per unit.
