While the Passat’s turbocharged four-cylinder engine gets decent EPA fuel economy, many competitors offer more efficient models and hybrid options. The VW’s estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway is lower than that of the Toyota Camry’s four-cylinder model. The Passat got 36 mpg on our fuel-economy route at 75 mph (part of our extensive testing regimen), while the Camry got an incredible 42 mpg.

One can choose between a six-speed manual transmission or a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 174 horsepower in the Passat. From low to high revs, the sedan’s engine performed smoothly and refinedly, making for effortless acceleration in our testing.
