2024 Toyota Highlander Gains Nightshade Trim
The 2024 Toyota Highlander brings some changes to its lineup. The base L trim has been discontinued, as well as the Bronze Edition trim, which has been replaced by the new Nightshade trim, offering a darker aesthetic. The removal of the L trim has an impact on pricing, as it means the lineup now starts with the better-equipped LE trim, starting at an MSRP of $39,120 (excluding the $1,395 destination charge). While this represents a modest $300 increase compared to the 2023 model, it results in a $2,700 higher entry price for the base Highlander compared to the previous year.
The positive news for Highlander buyers is that the special edition trim is now more affordable than it was in the previous year. The Bronze Edition has been replaced by the Nightshade edition, available on the Highlander hybrid LE and XLE variants, with a starting price of $41,720.
Customers can choose from various colors, including Cement, Wind Chill Pearl, Midnight Black, or Ruby Flare Pearl. Regardless of the paint color, the Nightshade package includes black 18-inch, five-spoke wheels, a black grille, black mirror caps, black door handles, black rear badging, a black rear spoiler, and a black shark fin antenna. In the XLE trim, the package also includes blacked-out roof rails.
Inside, the Nightshade trim offers black fabric-trimmed seats for LE models, while XLE models feature black two-tone Softex-trimmed seats with unique embossed fabric inserts and silver accent stitching. The XLE model also comes standard with heated front seats, a 10-way adjustable driver’s seat, and second-row captain’s chairs. Both models come with an eight-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, with the option for XLE buyers to upgrade to the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen.
The Nightshade trim is exclusive to Highlander models equipped with Toyota’s hybrid powertrain, which combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motor-generators, producing a total of 243 hp and an estimated combined fuel economy of 36 MPG.
Alternatively, buyers can opt for the gas-only 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine, which generates 265 hp but offers a lower combined fuel economy of 25 MPG. Both powertrain options remain unchanged from the 2023 model year.
One new addition is the standard hands-free power liftgate convenience feature, now available on all XLE and XSE models, whereas it was previously limited to the Limited and Platinum grades.
