Mahindra & Mahindra is gearing up to showcase its revolutionary Thar EV Concept, expected to be unveiled on August 15, 2023, in South Africa. This highly anticipated event will also feature the introduction of a next-generation Tractor platform and the debut of a pickup truck concept based on the Scorpio N. The Thar, known for its remarkable off-road capabilities, has already made a significant impact in the automotive world through its internal combustion engine (ICE) versions.
While the transition of the Thar EV Concept into a production model remains uncertain, Mahindra has ambitious plans to launch the XUV.e and BE range of electric SUVs starting from late next year. According to reports, the Thar EV Concept will not follow the typical twin electric motor setup, where each motor drives one axle to form a 4WD system.
Instead, this groundbreaking concept will feature four electric motors, presumably one powering each wheel. This innovative configuration could potentially demonstrate a crab walk function, enabling each wheel to turn close to 45 degrees. This capability would facilitate sideways movement in tight parking spaces or effortless 360-degree turns, showcasing the vehicle’s agility and versatility.
The Thar EV Concept’s underpinnings might be derived from a modified version of the body-on-frame platform used in its IC-engined avatar. Additionally, Mahindra might explore dedicated skateboard architectures, a trend observed in global markets, to further enhance off-road authenticity and performance for its electric SUVs.
Mahindra has acknowledged the potential of body-on-frame e-SUVs, and the upcoming event in South Africa is expected to provide insights into the brand’s future plans. Notably, Mahindra is currently testing the facelifted XUV300 compact SUV and a five-door variant of the Thar, both of which are slated for unveiling in the first half of the next year.
The larger Thar, positioned above the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Jimny five-door, will continue to house the powerful 2.2L mHawk diesel and the 2.0L mStallion petrol engines. Meanwhile, the updated XUV300 will draw design inspiration from its acclaimed sibling, the XUV700, and boast a fresh interior design.
With the Thar EV Concept and the upcoming XUV.e and BE range of electric SUVs, Mahindra aims to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle segment, catering to the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions. The August 15 event is eagerly awaited by enthusiasts and industry observers as it holds the promise of unveiling Mahindra’s innovative strides towards an electrified future.
