BYD Seagull: Chinese EV maker trademarks name in India, could be a Tata Tiago rival

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD Auto has recently secured the trademark for the name “Seagull” in India. This name will be attached to a new electric hatchback, showcased at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Expo in China. The upcoming EV hatchback is expected to compete in the price range of the Tata Motors Tiago EV. BYD Auto already offers two electric cars in India and the Seagull will join its EV lineup as the third model.

Once launched, the BYD Seagull will be BYD’s smallest EV available in India. Characterized by distinct design elements and sharp body lines, the hatchback will have a tall-boy design reminiscent of the hatchback Toyota GR Yaris. The front end will feature a sleek design with LED projector headlights, small DRLs, and a unique snake fang-like design. The absence of a grille is due to its EV nature.

The side profile will showcase normal front doors with flap door handles and uniquely designed rear doors with a tapered window line. Thin black plastic cladding will adorn the front and rear fenders and the doors. The car will roll on thick 5-spoke alloy wheels. The rear of the hatchback will continue the sharp and modern design theme with sleek LED taillamps and a connected LED light, consistent with current automotive trends. An extended rear spoiler and the snake fang-like design on the lower bumper will complete the rear styling.

Inside the cabin, the BYD Auto Seagull will feature a flowing and smooth design, similar to its sibling, the Atto 3 mid-size EV SUV. A multifunctional steering wheel and a digital instrument cluster will be the highlights. The central dashboard will be dominated by a large touchscreen infotainment system featuring modern connectivity features. Automatic air conditioning controls will be positioned below the screen, accompanied by AC vents. The dual-tone interior theme will be accented with silver garnishes.

Under the hood, or rather the floor, the Seagull will house a robust electric drivetrain. The international variants include the Vitality Edition, Freedom Edition, and Flight Edition, all powered by the same 55 kW (74 bhp) electric motor capable of reaching around 130 km/h. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is expected to take around 13 seconds.

Battery-wise, the Vitality and Freedom models feature a 30 kWh battery, offering an impressive range of 305 km. Meanwhile, the Flight Edition packs a 38 kWh battery, granting an even more impressive range of approximately 405 km. If these figures hold true in the Indian market, the BYD Seagull could present strong competition to the Tata Tiago EV, which currently leads as the top-selling EV hatchback in the country.
