However, the Rubicon and High Tide models, which bear the additional weight of more robust off-road equipment, demonstrated slightly slower acceleration times in our evaluations.
Performance assessments on our test track highlight that the Wrangler JL has made commendable improvements compared to its predecessor, although it remains on par with rivals in certain metrics. While its handling has seen enhancements, it still maintains a truck-like feel, distinct from the refined characteristics of contemporary SUVs and pickups. Ride quality in the four-door version is acceptably smooth over uneven surfaces; however, braking distances exhibited inconsistencies between our two test vehicles.
If the notion of conquering trails solely on electric power entices you, then the 4xe powertrain stands out as the clear and enticing option. Anchored by a 17.0-kWh battery pack, it promises a potential range of up to 25 miles in electric-only mode. Jeep ensures that this range is adequate for several hours of leisurely-paced off-roading. Once the battery depletes its charge, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine takes the reins, propelling all four wheels just like a standard Wrangler. This transition guarantees that concerns about being left without power are effectively laid to rest.
In a category dominated by gas-thirsty vehicles, even modest improvements can position a vehicle at the forefront. The Wrangler stands out in terms of EPA fuel-economy estimates, surpassing competitors like the Bronco and the 4Runner. During our assessment on a 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, the four-door Wrangler Sahara equipped with the V-6 engine achieved a commendable 20 mpg, which is 3 mpg lower than its EPA highway fuel economy rating. Meanwhile, the turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid model excelled, boasting an impressive 26 mpg – 2 mpg beyond the anticipated value.
While not the most capacious or accommodating SUV in its class, the Wrangler seamlessly combines the nostalgic charm of vintage Jeep design with modern elements. The elevated driving position provides a commanding view of the road, or off-road trail, facilitating easy maneuvering. However, the rearward view can be hindered by the presence of substantial roof pillars, roll bars, and various grab handles. Should an improved vantage point be necessary, one can simply remove the doors and even pop the top for an unobstructed outlook.
Occupants situated near the upright windshield are greeted by a narrow, squared-off dashboard adorned with circular air vents and robust controls for the climate system, power windows (if equipped), and infotainment features. When it comes to daily errands, the Wrangler offers sufficient space for groceries and belongings. Yet, it’s important to note that the rear seats do not fold completely flat with the floor, impacting cargo versatility. It’s worth considering the trade-off between the classic two-door Wrangler and the more spacious Unlimited four-door model. Opting for the two-door version means compromising on cargo capacity, as it can only accommodate two of our carry-on cases behind the back seat, in contrast to the four-door variant’s ability to fit ten cases.
