What is the real world fuel efficiency of Mahindra Thar?

We put the automatic gasoline and both diesel transmissions to the test. Our standardised tests revealed that the diesel-manual was the most fuel-efficient option, returning 12kpl in the city and 12.6kpl on the interstate. Diesel automatics lagged only slightly behind, with 11.3kpl in city driving and 11.5kpl on the interstate. As was to be expected, the petrol-automatic had the worst gas mileage, with 7kpl in the city and 9.3kpl on the highway (highway).

Analysis of Mahindra Thar’s fuel efficiency

Fuel efficiency in the Thar is affected by a number of factors. It weighs a hefty 1,735 kilogrammes for the petrol automatic, 1,774 kilogrammes for the diesel manual, and 1,783 kilogrammes for the diesel automatic, so be prepared to lift it. City efficiency isn’t great because to its bulky build, powerful engine, and lack of an Economy mode or engine start/stop technology.
When driving on the open road, you’ll notice that the gear ratios are perfectly spaced, and the vehicle consumes very little fuel while moving at a constant speed. When travelling at 100 kilometres per hour in sixth gear, the diesel-manual, diesel-automatic, and gasoline-automatic all have their engines revving at 2,100 rpm. Highway efficiency is not significantly better than city efficiency because of the vehicle’s boxy, non-aerodynamic design, which causes the engine to work harder to overcome wind resistance at greater speeds than it would otherwise. One important fact about the Thar is that it uses significantly less fuel when travelling at speeds below 90kph than when travelling at a constant 90-110kph.
