Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The X6 M is propelled by the same loud twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 as the BMW M5 car. In its stock configuration, it generates 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, and with the Competition package, it generates 617 horsepower. The powertrain is coupled to an adaptive all-wheel-drive system via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

All-wheel drive provides maximum traction, whereas rear-wheel drive improves handling. Adjustable brake-pedal feedback joins the X6 M’s various drive modes and user-configurable settings (accessible via buttons on the steering wheel). In addition to its standard 21-inch wheels and adjustable dampers, the BMW may be outfitted with optional 22-inchers at the rear (as is the case with the X6 M Competition).

We’ve sampled the X6 M Competition and can attest to its dazzling quickness off the line, astounding grip in turns, and robust, fade-free braking. Flat though it was very comfortable on the highway, the wide wheels and firm springs made for a bumpy ride over less even terrain.

The interior compartments consist mostly of a coverable bin located below the central stack and a practical bin located on the center console. Its coupe-like design doesn’t compromise the comfort of the front or back seat passengers, although the sloping roofline does limit rearward visibility and trunk capacity.
