The oddly shaped BMW X6 M is powered by a twin-turbo V-8 that generates 600 horsepower and puts it to the ground via an all-wheel-drive system that is weighted toward the rear. The M-Power mountain can be moved in style thanks to the luxurious cabin that comes equipped with cutting-edge technology and high-end fixtures and fittings.
BMW cranks up the volume on its exhilarating mid-size luxury SUV with the optional Competition package, which adds 17 horsepower, a raucous M Sport exhaust, and sport seats, all while maintaining the X6 M’s stickier performance summer tyres and stiffly-sprung chassis. Similar to the X6 M, other SUVs including the Porsche Cayenne Coupe and Mercedes-AMG GLE-class have adopted a sloping rear roofline design.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The X6 M is propelled by the same loud twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 as the BMW M5 car. In its stock configuration, it generates 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, and with the Competition package, it generates 617 horsepower. The powertrain is coupled to an adaptive all-wheel-drive system via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
All-wheel drive provides maximum traction, whereas rear-wheel drive improves handling. Adjustable brake-pedal feedback joins the X6 M’s various drive modes and user-configurable settings (accessible via buttons on the steering wheel). In addition to its standard 21-inch wheels and adjustable dampers, the BMW may be outfitted with optional 22-inchers at the rear (as is the case with the X6 M Competition).
We’ve sampled the X6 M Competition and can attest to its dazzling quickness off the line, astounding grip in turns, and robust, fade-free braking. Flat though it was very comfortable on the highway, the wide wheels and firm springs made for a bumpy ride over less even terrain.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The X6 M has a combined city/highway fuel economy of 13 mpg. These specs match those of the X5 M exactly. Neither Bimmer has been available for testing on our 75 mph highway fuel-economy route, thus we cannot at this time determine how efficient they are under actual driving conditions.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Inside, the X6 M combines sportiness with opulence thanks to carbon fiber highlights and standard leather upholstery. A 12.3-inch completely digital gauge cluster and a sizable head-up display ensure that cutting-edge technology is not lacking. In addition, there are comforts like massage-capable front seats with temperature regulation, heated back seats, and other perks.
The interior compartments consist mostly of a coverable bin located below the central stack and a practical bin located on the center console. Its coupe-like design doesn’t compromise the comfort of the front or back seat passengers, although the sloping roofline does limit rearward visibility and trunk capacity. Comparatively, the X5 M has 34 cubic feet of space behind the second row, while the X6 M only offers 27 cubic feet.
Infotainment and Connectivity
X6 M dashboards include a massive 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It is controlled by a rotary controller located in the centre console, as well as by motions of the driver’s hand, voice instructions, and the current version of BMW’s iDrive software. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Harman/Kardon sound system are some of the best standard equipment. Want a more robust stereo system? There is an option to upgrade to a Bowers & Wilkins system for a higher price.
