If you’re the type of individual who relishes weekends in the great outdoors—or perhaps you simply aspire to exude that spirit—the 2024 Jeep Wrangler stands as an SUV capable of transporting you virtually anywhere your heart desires. Jeep’s evolution from its military origins has yielded a vehicle that not only encompasses rugged prowess but also embraces an array of modern comforts. In fact, the higher-tier trims could even be characterized as lavish. However, it’s important to note that the Wrangler doesn’t necessarily pamper you with a cushioned ride or massage your backside during your journey to the trailhead. Remaining true to its truck-like essence, it retains a robust demeanor that matches its road behavior. The ride quality can be jarring over uneven surfaces, and consistent steering corrections are often necessary to maintain a straight trajectory.

When compared, both the Ford Bronco and Toyota 4Runner offer a more refined experience with comparable capabilities. That said, Jeep differentiates itself by presenting an extensive range of powertrain choices beyond its competitors, including a plug-in hybrid option and an exclusive 470-horsepower V-8 engine reserved for the Rubicon 392 model.

What’s New for 2024?

For the 2024 model year, the Wrangler receives a subtle yet noteworthy visual and technological refresh. This includes an updated grille design and an impressive array of 10 new wheel options. Inside the cabin, an enhanced 12.3-inch infotainment display is now standard across all trims, effectively replacing the smaller 5.0- and 7.0-inch screens featured in the previous year’s Wrangler models. This new display incorporates Jeep’s latest infotainment software and introduces wireless compatibility for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Notably, the onboard navigation system is equipped with mapping for over 2000 trails, and the capability to download additional trails as desired. A more robust active noise-cancellation system has been integrated to effectively reduce cabin noise during phone calls, contributing to a quieter environment.

Furthermore, the plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain is now available for the Sport and Rubicon X trims. Additionally, hybrid models have been enhanced with a 3.6-kilowatt auxiliary battery dedicated to powering accessories, further augmenting their functionality and convenience.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Wrangler offers a selection of five distinct powertrains to cater to various preferences. The lineup commences with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine generating 285 horsepower. This engine is available with a choice between a six-speed manual gearbox or an adept eight-speed automatic transmission. An optional configuration involves a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in collaboration with an electric motor, enhancing low-end power. However, this specific powertrain is exclusively mated to the eight-speed automatic transmission. Expanding the options further, the Wrangler can also be equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 hybrid, a robust 375-horsepower plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain, or a potent 6.4-liter V-8 engine.

With its innate off-road prowess, all Wranglers come standard with part-time four-wheel drive, conveniently controlled via a lever on the center console. Performance evaluations showcase the capability of different models. In our testing, a base two-door Wrangler Sport equipped with the V-6 engine and a six-speed manual transmission accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk 6.1 seconds. Comparatively, a well-equipped four-door Sahara variant featuring the automatic transmission accomplished the same feat in 6.8 seconds. The introduction of the four-cylinder hybrid powertrain yielded a slightly swifter result of 6.5 seconds for the four-door Sahara model. However, the Rubicon and High Tide models, which bear the additional weight of more robust off-road equipment, demonstrated slightly slower acceleration times in our evaluations.

Performance assessments on our test track highlight that the Wrangler JL has made commendable improvements compared to its predecessor, although it remains on par with rivals in certain metrics. While its handling has seen enhancements, it still maintains a truck-like feel, distinct from the refined characteristics of contemporary SUVs and pickups. Ride quality in the four-door version is acceptably smooth over uneven surfaces; however, braking distances exhibited inconsistencies between our two test vehicles.
