2024 Ford Mustang: What We Know So Far

Ford has introduced the seventh iteration of its iconic Mustang muscle car, featuring a refreshed yet familiar design, updated chassis components, an all-new interior, and two enhanced powertrain options. While the latest Mustang boasts a range of improvements for the future, its competitors, namely the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger, face uncertain prospects. The new-generation Mustang is equipped with a 5.0-liter V-8 engine that delivers an impressive 480 horsepower. Additionally, there’s a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine producing 315 horsepower, an improvement over the previous version. Both powertrains are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, while the V-8 option can also be matched with a six-speed manual. The Mustang is available in both hardtop coupe and soft top convertible body styles. With its revamped interior and upgraded engine choices, the Mustang maintains its legacy in the realm of muscle cars.

What’s New for 2024?

The Mustang has entered its seventh generation with a fresh and much-needed design overhaul. Alongside numerous style and powertrain enhancements, the new iteration introduces a range of offerings tailored for speed enthusiasts. Both the Mustang GT and EcoBoost models will feature an optional Performance Pack equipment upgrade, which includes a front strut-tower brace, Torsen limited-slip differential, wider wheels and tires, larger Brembo brakes, and a MagneRide active-dampening suspension. Performance-focused options such as Recaro bucket seats and an active exhaust are also available. Notably, Ford has introduced the Performance Electronic Parking Brake, designed to resemble a traditional lever-action handbrake and enhance the Mustang’s drifting capabilities. Additionally, a brand-new Mustang Dark Horse track-ready model has been introduced, boasting a more menacing 500-hp Coyote V-8 engine and direct access to Ford Performance parts for enhanced equipment upgrades. This latest iteration of the Mustang is geared towards delivering a leaner and more formidable performance experience.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The new Mustang boasts an upgraded standard turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, now producing 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. While this represents a 5-horsepower increase from the previous model, it falls short of the last-gen EcoBoost Performance’s 330-hp output. All EcoBoost Mustangs are equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, the Mustang GT, featuring a 5.0-liter V-8, offers a six-speed manual as the standard option. The previous generation’s Coyote V-8 generated 450 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, but the new version boasts an impressive 480 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque.

Our initial drive of the new Mustang highlighted significant improvements in steering feel and feedback. Ford offers an optional performance exhaust that can further elevate output to 486 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque. The inclusion of MagnaRide dampers ensures a smooth absorption of road irregularities without disrupting the driving experience inside the cabin.

The all-new Mustang Dark Horse model, a track-focused variant based on the GT, is powered by a robust 500-hp 5.0-liter V-8 engine. This model is a continuation of the much-loved Mach 1 from the previous generation. Unlike the GT’s MT-82 six-speed manual transmission, the Dark Horse features a six-speed manual Tremec TR-3160 transmission, previously seen in the Mach 1 and discontinued Shelby GT350. For those seeking enhanced acceleration, an optional 10-speed automatic transmission is also available.

The Dark Horse is equipped with 19-inch Pirelli P Zero PZ4 tires as standard, with the option of an optional Handling package from Ford that swaps these out for sticker Pirelli Trofeo RS tires. While our test team has yet to conduct a formal evaluation, we will provide updates as soon as their findings become available.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

According to EPA estimates, the turbocharged four-cylinder Mustang achieves a commendable 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Opting for the optional Performance Package does lead to a minor reduction in fuel efficiency in exchange for enhanced power, with figures of 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

Comparatively, the previous generation’s V-8-powered Mustang attained EPA ratings of 15 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, and these figures remain consistent for the current model. The 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse, however, exhibits a higher thirst for gasoline, achieving 14 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Sitting in the driver’s seat of the 2024 Mustang, you’ll immediately notice the meticulous attention to detail, characterized by Ford as “fighter-jet inspired” design. Surprisingly, this design approach translates into a comfortable and supportive seating experience. While we eagerly await to see if the Mustang’s performance will rival that of breaking the sound barrier, one thing is certain: the standard 12.4-inch instrument cluster is a significant leap forward compared to its predecessor. This highly configurable display can be tailored to suit the preferences of drivers, offering a range of selectable colors, gauges, and even a serene “calm” screen that presents only essential information. The ambient lighting and driver’s display adapt according to the chosen drive mode.

The base Mustang models feature cloth seats with optional micro-suede vinyl inserts, while the Premium level enhances the experience with meticulously stitched components that extend from the door trim to the dashboard. In the Mustang GT, you’ll find leather inserts adding an extra touch of luxury. Ford has also introduced a unique feature called Remote Rev, allowing you to rev the engine at the press of a button on the key fob, allowing you to relish the delightful engine sounds from outside the car.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Significant strides have been made in the realm of interior technology within the new Mustang. A standout feature is the available 13.2-inch infotainment screen, seamlessly integrated with Ford’s Sync 4 software. This expansive display extends gracefully from the gauge cluster towards the car’s center, elegantly encased by a curved glass panel. Standard offerings include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, while the optional wireless smartphone charger enhances convenience by eliminating the need for cluttered charging cables.

The integration of Amazon Alexa and Ford Streaming introduces the convenience of voice commands, allowing drivers to accomplish tasks without the need for traditional knob-turning or button pressing. Furthermore, Ford Power-Up software capability is included in every Mustang, enabling over-the-air updates for future software enhancements and refinements to vehicle functions. This ensures that your Mustang remains up-to-date and optimized for an evolving technological landscape.
