This curated clip, excerpted from the 1995 Republic Day Parade broadcast on Doordarshan, provides a captivating glimpse into a bygone era. Amidst the parade, a convoy graces the Rajpath, comprising iconic vehicles like the Maruti Gypsy and Hindustan Ambassador sedans. The Maruti Gypsy was emblematic of security forces, while government officials and politicians favored the Hindustan Ambassador.
Notably, the Tata Sierra, alongside the Tata Sumo and Hindustan Ambassador, forms a crucial part of this procession. The Tata Sierra’s presence was of particular significance, serving as the designated vehicle for the then-Prime Minister, P. V. Narasimha Rao. As the convoy advances towards Amar Jawan Jyoti, the aura of the Special Protection Group (SPG) officers envelops the Tata Sumo, emblematic of their steadfast commitment to safeguarding the Prime Minister and immediate family.
A pivotal moment in the video showcases the convergence of the convoy at Amar Jawan Jyoti. Amidst this choreography, the Hindustan Ambassadors take divergent paths, while the Tata Sumo, abounding with SPG commandos, offers protective cover for the Prime Minister’s Tata Sierra. Former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao gracefully emerges from the Sierra’s interior, a testament to the Sierra’s historical role. Notably, due to its distinctive three-door layout, the PM alights from the co-passenger side, showcasing the practicality nuances of this unique SUV.
Powering the Tata Sierra was a Peugeot-derived 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, initially generating 63 Bhp, which was later turbocharged in 1997 to yield a more robust 90 Bhp. Paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the Sierra carried its legacy forward.
In a fitting tribute to the Sierra’s enduring appeal, Tata Motors unveiled an advanced iteration of the Sierra concept at a recent Auto Expo. Evidencing the widespread nostalgia for the Sierra, the concept resonated with enthusiasts.
