In India, the yearly mileage of a car is still a major factor in the choice to buy a new car. In the case of little cars like hatchbacks and inexpensive sedans, it is the deciding factor. In response, newer vehicles have improved fuel efficiency ratings and an ARAI certification number (Automotive Research Association of India). The multi-functional display of today’s vehicles sometimes includes a real-time mileage indicator. But if you drive an older automobile that doesn’t have any of these gadgets, how can you tell how far you’ve actually driven?
If you want to know how far your car really goes, the ‘tankful to tankful’ method is the most accurate way to accomplish so. It’s a slow process, but it greatly minimises the margin of error. It’s easy, and here’s what you should do:
1. Top-Up Your Tank
Fill up your gas tank at a certain gas station using a designated dispenser. When the fuel in the tank hits the top, most dispenser nozzles will automatically shut off. There’s no need to continue filling past this point.
2. Reset The Meter
Reset the trip meter of the car to zero.
3. Follow The Speed Limit
We know all of us like to drive fast sometimes but the faster the car goes, the more fuel it uses. Thus, don’t over-revv and drive around the speed limit.
4. Drive Around
You should get at least 250-300 kilometres (km) out of a single tank of gas. This could take several days, but as gasoline is consumed, the estimate becomes more stable.
5. Fill Up Again
Visit the same fuel pump and fill up the car fuel tank. Again, once the dispenser hits the auto cut-off and stops, do not fill more. Note the amount of fuel that went in.
6. Calculate the Car mileage
Calculate your car mileage by dividing the number of kilometers you drove as per the trip meter by the quantity of fuel used. No rocket science just simple numeracy!
Car mileage = No. of Kms/ Quantity Of Fuel Used
Repeat the process a few times to solidify your understanding. When that number gets pretty high, it may be a lot of fun to do on long drives on the open road. Give it a shot, and both your impressions and your real-world gas mileage will be greatly appreciated. Downloading a simple app like “Fuelio” is a great way to keep track of your car’s long-term fuel economy performance; these Apps are user-friendly and provide visual representations of data such as fuel economy, running costs, fuel expenditures, and so on.
