The Volkswagen ID.4 SUV of the year 2023 is the automaker’s attempt to bring electric vehicles to the masses; it successfully combines functionality, comfort, and a respectable range. Wish it had a more lighthearted, carefree attitude while driving. Models with rear-wheel drive have a standard one-motor setup producing 201 horsepower, while those with all-wheel drive have two-motors generating 295 horsepower. The maximum range is around 275 miles per charge, however the base Standard trim, while enticing because of its lower price, combines a smaller battery with just approximately 208 miles of range. DC fast-charging is included into the ID.4 as standard equipment, so refueling at public charging stations is quick and painless.
What’s Coming in 2023?
Volkswagen’s ID.4 production line in the United States has been relocated to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the 2023 model year. This year, we’ve added the more affordable Standard model to the portfolio. It has an estimated range of 208 miles on a single charge, but its battery pack is just 58 kWh in size.
The ID.4 family has expanded with a new top-tier Pro S Plus model that includes options such as heated rear seats, a three-zone automatic climate control system, exclusive 20-inch wheels, and a premium sound system. Volkswagen has made a few subtle changes to the design, like adding gloss black exterior trim, new wheel designs, and new paint colors, and making the larger 12.0-inch touchscreen display standard on all versions (it was an option in 2017). Volkswagen’s Pro S versions now come standard with lighted front and rear badges, and the center console has undergone a minor facelift.
Volkswagen ID.4 Price
An initial list price of $40,760 is set for the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4. For about $50,000, you can get a fully-loaded version.
Volkswagen is taking electrification seriously, and ID.4 is evidence of that. Volkswagen’s first all-electric sport utility vehicle for the North American market. The ID.4’s sleek exterior, comfortable cabin, and silent ride are just a few of its many strengths. Also, a compact crossover with a large cargo area is extremely useful in day-to-day life.
The ID.4 can be had in either a rear-wheel drive (RWD) or an all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration, with the former being standard for both trim levels. This vehicle’s dual-motor all-wheel-drive system allows for increased speed and superior grip in any weather.
The ID.4’s range has been increased for the year 2022. The ID.4 Pro, with its rear-wheel drive, now has an increased range of 280 miles per charge. New estimates put the ID.4 Pro S at 268 miles, with the AWD Pro at 251.
The Volkswagen ID.4’s competitors include the more expensive and roomier Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y. The Chevrolet Bolt EUV is a more budget-friendly alternative in electric crossover SUVs, though it’s much smaller than the ID.4.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance
The ID.4 produces 201 horsepower from its single rear-mounted motor, while the all-wheel-drive variant generates 295 hp. There is a hefty 2700-pound maximum towing capacity. While the ID.4’s most aggressive regenerative mode may help recapture energy when slowing the vehicle, it still lacks the typical one-pedal driving that EV drivers have learned to cherish. Moreover, electric vehicles typically do not offer the kind of acceleration that punches you in the gut. The rear-wheel-drive ID.4 is not slow by conventional compact-crossover standards, but its 7.6-second sprint to 60 mph in our testing shows that it is much more relaxed than speedier EV competitors. The ID.4’s 5.4-second sprint to 60 mph in the all-wheel-drive version shows that the extra power is well worth the cost. We wish the ID.4 had sharper handling like some other EVs, but we still like its refined ride and quiet cabin.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
The ID.4 can compete with other electric SUVs like the Hyundai Kona Electric and the Kia Niro EV thanks to its optional 77.0-kWh battery pack, which can power the vehicle for up to 275 miles before needing to be recharged. But the Tesla Model Y’s estimated range by the EPA is 330 miles, thus VW’s estimate falls short. The battery is compatible with DC rapid charging as well as standard AC charging (110/240 volts). The Standard model’s battery is smaller (at 58 kWh) and its range is less (at 208 miles), but it is also the most affordable option.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe
The ID.4 Pro S, with rear-wheel drive, has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 104 MPGe in the city and 89 MPGe on the highway; the ID.4 Pro, also with rear-wheel drive, has a slightly better rating, at 107 MPGe in the city and 91 MPGe on the highway. The ID.4, with its efficient rear-wheel drive, covered 190 miles on our highway fuel-economy test at 75 mph. Keep in mind that our testing has shown that the EPA range statistics may exaggerate or underestimate the actual difference in highway range between EVs. The 190-mile result is even more amazing given that we did all of our testings in conditions close to freezing, which can significantly diminish driving range. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
While the ID. Crozz Concept’s cabin was flamboyant with a retractable steering wheel and sliding rear doors, the ID.4’s inside is more subdued but still has a modern design with high-tech gadgets, ambient lighting, and plenty of cargo space. The cabin is light and entertaining, with heated fabric seats in the front as standard and faux leather upholstery, and 12-way power front seats with a memory feature available on the more expensive Pro S trim. There is a lot of room for freight in the ID.4. Behind the back seats of the ID.4, we stowed eight baggage, and with the seats flipped forward, we had room for twenty-six.
Infotainment and Connectivity
One of the ID.4’s basic features is a 12.0-inch touchscreen for accessing the vehicle’s entertainment options. Although VW’s newest infotainment interface is available in popular vehicles like the Jetta sedan and the Tiguan SUV, we found it to be more cumbersome to use than the last generation’s system. In addition to the customary inclusion of a navigation system, all new purchases of a compatible vehicle will also get a wireless version of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 5.3-inch digital gauge display with voice-recognition functionality is standard on all ID.4 models.
