Porsche Taycan Price, Specs, Colours, Images & Auto Facts

Most electric cars don’t put much emphasis on replicating the fun-to-drive features of sports cars, but the Porsche Taycan does. Porsche saw the switch to battery power as an opportunity rather than an excuse, and the company created a four-door vehicle with an emphasis on human interaction rather than robotic, soulless transportation.

Despite the fact that rivals like the Tesla Model S and Lucid Air have longer predicted ranges than the Taycan’s maximum EPA rating of 246 miles, the Porsche drives with the kind of regal confidence and control one would expect from a Porsche. Every Taycan, from the entry-level model with a 402 hp single-rear-motor to the hyper-fast 750 hp Turbo S, has a two-speed transmission that strikes a perfect mix between blistering acceleration and respectable motorway range.

The Taycan Cross and Sport Turismo, the station waggon variant of this sedan, are discussed in a different article. Because of its 800-volt design, the Taycan can be charged at a rate of up to 270 kilowatt-hours per hour when connected to a high-enough-current direct current fast charger. The characteristic driving experience in Stuttgart is rounded off with the low-slung driving posture and the curved 16.8-inch display.

The base price of a Porsche Taycan 4S is $103,800. Turbo models begin at a price of $150,900. For $185,000, you can get into the Turbo S model.

What’s New for 2023?

Porsche cranks up the heat on all Taycans, not just 2023 models, with a new battery and charging technology that improves both driving range and charging times. Porsche claims that the Taycan’s battery will be preconditioned to a greater temperature, allowing the vehicle to attain its maximum 270 kWh charge at a more fully charged state. We are waiting for the EPA’s official rating to see if this increases the total range.

The updated infotainment screen now features a more vibrant and responsive user interface, wireless Android Auto, and the ability to narrow your search for charging stations based on their output. Porsche’s Variable Light Control was previously available only on the Taycan GTS, but is now standard on all Taycans with a panoramic glass top. For better management of scalp overheating, the driver can electronically switch between a transparent and opaque canopy. Discontinuation of painted 19-inch Aero wheels.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

Most Taycan variants are equipped with two electric motors, one for each set of wheels. Separate outputs are generated depending on the amount of trim. With the smaller battery, the 4S generates 522 hp and with the larger battery, it produces 562 hp. The top-tier Turbo (670 hp) and Turbo S (750 hp) models both include the massive juicer as standard equipment.

Depending on the size of the battery, the standard model can produce 402 to 469 hp, however, it can only be driven in the back. The Taycan GTS with 590 horsepower and 626 lb-ft of torque hits the perfect spot. There is a novel two-speed transmission in all Taycan models, and it makes for an exhilarating shift when the gas is really pressed. The Taycan 4S’s quick acceleration (reaching 60 mph in 3.4 seconds) and responsive steering left a lasting impression on us.

Given that Porsche opted against a single-pedal driving mode, we do wish the brake pedal were more responsive. Those who have an extreme thirst for speed will be astounded by the Turbo S’s spaceship-like acceleration. We tested a variant that could reach 60 mph in 2.4 seconds and complete the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds at 130 mph.

An identical sprint to 60 mph might be achieved in a Model S Performance equipped with Cheetah mode, while a Model S Plaid would completely smash the Porsche. One of the things that set the Taycan apart from other EVs is its fierce acceleration, which works in tandem with the car’s low centre of gravity and precision steering. It’s also quite cosy. Another Taycan Turbo S we tested never felt brittle or harsh, even when equipped with 21-inch wheels and low-profile tyres.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

Compared to the Tesla Model S, which can travel over 400 miles on a single charge, the Taycan’s range seems somewhat meagre. Depending on the size of the battery and the power of the electric motors, the Porsche may go between 208 and 246 miles on a single charge.

There is a maximum 270-kilowatt charging rate possible thanks to the 800-volt design standard across the board. Porsche claims that their larger battery pack, which they call 93.4 kWh but only use 83.7 kWh of, can be charged from 5% to 80% in just 23 minutes. However, as we found in our comparative test, 800-volt DC fast chargers are uncommon, and peak charging rates don’t tell us very much.

Porsche claims that charging takes only 93 minutes when using a 50-kW DC fast charger. Standard rapid charging capabilities are rated at 270 kW, with 50 kW available as an upgrade. During our eleven-vehicle, one-thousand-mile EV1000 rally, we were exposed to real-world charging variables.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

Maximum combined MPGe for the most efficient Taycan is 83. The MPGe rating of the Tesla Model S Long Range is 120 MPGe for comparison. The Porsche can go up to 88 MPGe on the highway, while the Tesla can get up to 115 MPGe. On our 75 mph highway test route, the Taycan 4S with the big battery achieved 65 MPGe.

We ran the same simulation on a 2018 Model S 100D and saw an efficiency of 91 MPGe. On the same highway test that revealed the 2020 Taycan 4S’s impressive theoretical range, we observed its actual range increase to 180 miles. The EPA has details on the Taycan’s fuel efficiency, so head there if you’re curious.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The modern-looking interior of a Taycan is just as cutting-edge as its outside. The styling is deceptively straightforward, bringing to mind previous Porsche offerings. As would be imagined, the interior can be decorated with a wide variety of luxurious materials and colour palettes. Four-zone climate control, massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated back seats are just some of the posh extras you may order.

While 2+2 seating is typical in the Taycan, an additional seat can be added to the back if needed. We didn’t like having to squeeze into the low front seat of the electric Porsche, and we wished there was more room in the backseat and the trunk. However, the driver has a great field of vision.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Inside the Taycan, there are many screens, but few actual buttons or dials. There are two touchscreens in the middle of the dashboard to operate the entertainment system, which includes a curved 16.8-inch display for the gauges. The upper one is 10.9 inches in size and is built right into the dashboard.

It’s a gateway to critical features. Underneath it, an 8.4-inch touchscreen allows control of climate, battery life, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, and trunk/charge port access. The front passenger can use a display measuring 10.2 inches, while those riding in the back can use a display measuring 5.9 inches to regulate the temperature and warmth of their seats.
