BMW X5 Protection VR6: The Perfect Vehicle for Those Who Need Extra Protection

BMW’s latest release, the armored X5 Protection VR6, may outwardly resemble a standard model, but its capabilities are far from ordinary. This vehicle brings a sense of security to oligarchs, presidents, and successful businesspeople.

BMW has reinforced the X5’s body with armored steel and bulletproof safety glass. Essential components such as doors, side frames, roof, and bulkhead are crafted from high-strength steel. The underbody is also armored, and the SUV features a self-sealing fuel tank encased to resist bullet penetration.

Beyond the structural enhancements, various upgrades have been implemented. These include an intercom system, LED lights integrated into the grille, flashing rear lights, and roof-mounted light beacons. A new roof antenna and a receiver for a digital two-way radio have also been incorporated.

What sets the BMW X5 Protection VR6 apart is its ability to blend in. Unlike many other armored vehicles, it closely resembles a standard X5. Gloss black wing mirror caps, black BMW Individual roof rails, and a range of paint finishes, including BMW Individual options, contribute to its inconspicuous appearance.

Inside, the armored X5’s cabin is comparably equipped to its non-armored counterpart, albeit exclusively as a four-seater. It boasts the BMW Curved Display, comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment display. The cabin also features four-zone automatic climate control, sport seats enveloped in Merino leather, and the option for electrically adjustable comfort seats with active seat ventilation and massage functionality.

Powering the X5 Protection VR6 is BMW’s familiar 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, coupled with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This combination delivers a combined output of 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. The vehicle is also equipped with adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential, and active roll stabilization.

BMW plans to commence the initial deliveries of the armored X5 in February 2024. The vehicle is set to debut at the IAA Mobility show in Munich in September.
