2024 BMW Z4 M40i review

The 2023 BMW Z4, in its G29 generation, receives a subtle facelift, but has it transformed into a sharper driver’s car? Not quite. The changes for 2023 are primarily visual, with updates to the front grille, headlights, and air intakes. It’s available with two engine options, including a 3.0-liter straight-six turbo, tested here in the range-topping BMW Z4 M40i.

The Z4 M40i’s straight-six engine remains a delightful powerplant, offering strong low-end torque and a pleasant exhaust note. The car impresses with its refinement whether the roof is up or down, providing minimal wind buffeting even at higher speeds. The roof operates smoothly and quickly, adding to the overall convenience of the convertible.

Inside, the Z4 boasts a comfortable and practical cabin, with ample storage space, a large touchscreen infotainment system, and impressive fit and finish. It may not have the most sports car-like interior, but it offers a pleasant and comfortable environment for longer journeys.

On the road, the Z4 handles well, with an electronically controlled differential, good front-end grip, and a torque-rich engine that can make it a fun, yet safe, car to drive. However, when pushed hard, the convertible’s lack of torsional rigidity becomes apparent.

The ride quality has improved, especially in Comfort mode, thanks to standard electronically controlled dampers. In Sport mode, the ride can become a bit too firm, and the steering feels overly stiff for some drivers, but the flexibility to choose between driving modes allows for a customized experience.

The BMW Z4 has matured over time and showcases its strengths in usability, comfort, and refinement, offering a more relaxed driving experience than some of its rivals. While it may not be the most thrilling sports car, it remains a solid option for those seeking a comfortable and enjoyable convertible.
