Toyota Sales Soars Past Kia
In September 2023, the Indian automotive industry experienced a notable upswing, witnessing the sale of nearly 3.62 lakh passenger vehicles. This marked a growth of over 2 percent when compared to the same month in the previous year. As the festive season draws near, experts anticipate further increases in sales, driven by the introduction of new models and upcoming launches.
Maruti Suzuki continued to maintain its dominant position, reporting total sales of 1,50,812 units, a slight increase from the 1,48,380 units sold in the corresponding month of the prior year. Hyundai Motor India also displayed strong performance, achieving a year-on-year growth of 9.1 percent, with sales reaching 54,241 units, up from 49,700 units in September 2022. Tata Motors and Mahindra secured the third and fourth positions in the rankings, with sales figures of 44,810 units and 41,267 units, respectively.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has maintained its impressive performance, securing the fourth position and achieving its highest-ever monthly sales figure of 22,168 units. The company attributes this success to the sustained demand across its product range, underpinned by its reputation for reliability and a robust service network. With the recent introduction of new models such as the Innova Hycross and re-badged Maruti Suzuki vehicles, Toyota has witnessed a remarkable year-on-year sales growth of over 44 percent. Currently, Toyota commands a 6.1 percent share of the total market, surpassing Kia India, Honda Cars India, and MG Motor India in sales.
In line with its strategy, Toyota Kirloskar Motor is preparing to launch a micro SUV based on the Maruti Fronx, expected to debut in October 2023. The recent trademarking of the ‘Toyota Taisor’ nameplate strongly suggests it will be assigned to this upcoming re-badged Fronx. Furthermore, Toyota has ambitious plans to introduce a range of new SUVs, including a three-row SUV based on the Corolla Cross, a mid-size SUV codenamed Toyota 340D, and the next-generation Fortuner.
