New Hyundai i20: A GNCAP crash test gave the newest generation Hyundai i20 a 3-star rating for both adult and child passenger safety.
The Global NCAP recently crash-tested a small number of vehicles, including the third-generation Hyundai i20. The most recent Hyundai Creta from this production run was likewise put through these same safety tests, and it also scored a perfect three stars for both adult and child occupant safety.
The Hyundai i20 used in this and all previous safety evaluations was the base model, which includes dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes, and a seatbelt reminder for the driver and front passenger. New for 2020, the i20 competes head-on with vehicles like the Maruti Baleno, Honda Jazz, Toyota Glanza, and Tata Altroz.
The adult occupant score for the new Hyundai i20 was 8.84 out of 17, which equates to a 3-star rating. Both the vehicle’s bodyshell and footwell are assessed as unstable and unable to withstand any additional weights in the NCAP evaluation. The i20 did poorly because the driver’s chest was poorly protected and the passenger’s and driver’s knees were only slightly protected. However, front seat passengers had anywhere between acceptable and good protection for their heads and necks.
The Hyundai i20 received a score of 36.89 out of a possible 49 for kid passenger safety. ISOFIX child seat connectors are standard equipment on the i20 base model. According to Global NCAP, while the vehicle scored well for preventing forward movement, it was penalised for providing insufficient protection for the child’s neck. A few more points were deducted since the middle rear seat passenger is only provided with a lap belt.
In 2018, Global NCAP evaluated the first version of the Hyundai i20 for the Indian market. Although the previous generation i20 also earned a 3-star rating from Global NCAP, its overall score in adult protection was far higher. The previous generation of the i20 received a score of 10.15 for adult occupant protection, compared to the current generation’s 8.84. In contrast to the previous generation, which only achieved a 2-star safety rating with 18.16 points, the newer model has shown substantial improvement in kid occupant protection.
Even though from the SX Executive trim up, you may have conveniences like rear disc brakes, ISOFIX child seat attachments, and electronic stability control (ESC). Here, it’s worth noting that the Indian government is working to update the minimum safety standards for all vehicles sold within the country. Among the changes, the requirement that all vehicles sold in the country have six airbags begins in October 2022. In reality, the government has plans to make ESC and AEB required in the near future. The Global NCAP, however, plans to increase the stringency of its own safety requirements. As of this coming July, the company will implement new side-impact and pedestrian protection tests, as well as an updated testing approach that includes ESC.
Hyundai will release a slew of new models by the end of the year, including a refreshed Creta with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and other new safety equipment. In addition, the automaker will introduce the refreshed Alcazar, revised Venue, and the second-generation Tucson.
