Whenever the topic of alternative fuels is brought up in India, CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is the first thing that springs to mind. CNG (compressed natural gas) taxis are plentiful in this country. CNG vehicles are primarily used for commercial purposes, but some individuals do so as well.

It has many advantages, the most important one being gas mileage. Gasoline and diesel costs are rising and are expected to keep rising. CNG cars became popular due to the public’s search for alternatives. This is why we have compiled a pricing and mileage comparison of automobiles that have a CNG fuel system installed from the factory.

Maruti Suzuki Alto 800

The 800cc gasoline/CNG engine of the Alto 800 CNG generates 40hp and 60Nm of torque. The transmission it is coupled to has five gears. The mileage is 31.59 km/kg with the CNG unit. Approximately 60 liters of gas can be stored in the tank. Two models are available, both of which may be converted to run-on compressed natural gas (CNG), with pricing starting at 4,375,000 rupees (about $41,500) before shipping and handling.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso

The CNG fuel system is included as an alternative to the S-Presso. With its 1.0-litre engine, S-Presso generates 67 horsepower and 90 Newton meters of torque. It has a manual transmission with five speeds. An outstanding 31.2 km/kg is achieved. There’s room for 55 litres of gas. It is available for an ex-showroom price of between $48,3000 and $51,300.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

Wagon R’s 1.0-liter engine uses a compressed natural gas (CNG) unit, producing 58 horsepower and 78 Newton meters (Nm) of torque. An optional manual transmission with 5 gears is offered. An acceptable 32.52 km/kg is achieved. There’s room for 60 liters of gas. The Wagon R can be had for between Rs 5.29 lakhs and Rs 5.36 lakhs (about US$7,500 and US$8,100).

Maruti Suzuki Eeco

The CNG version of the Eeco features a 1.2-liter engine. It has a 6.2 liter engine displacement, 85 Nm of torque, and a 5-speed manual transmission. The Eeco has a fuel economy of 20.88 km/kg and a maximum tank size of 65 liters. The Eeco has an ex-showroom price of Rs 5.05 lakhs.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio

The Maruti Suzuki Celero is available with a compressed natural gas engine. It comes equipped with a 58hp, 78Nm 1.0-liter engine. A 5-speed manual transmission is coupled to this powerplant. The mileage of 30.47 km/kg is quite good. Celerio can hold 60 liters of gas. Depending on which trim level you choose, the Celerio will set you back between Rs 5.62 lakhs and Rs 5.72 lakhs, all taxes and fees included.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire

There is a CNG version of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire that is powered by a 1.2-liter engine that generates 70 horsepower and 95 pound-feet of torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox is included. Dzire CNG has a fuel capacity of 60 liters and a mileage of 26.55 km/kg. Ex-showroom, the Dzire CNG would set you back Rs 5.99 lakhs.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

Only the Ertiga CNG has a compressed natural gas (CNG) kit, making it the only 7-seater on this list. 92 horsepower and 122 Newton-meters of torque come from its 1.5-liter engine. It has a 5-speed manual gearbox as well. The fuel economy of the Ertiga is 26.08 km/kg, and it can hold 60 liters of gas. The price of an Ertiga is Rs. 8.94 lakhs (about $1,390), without tax and license.

Hyundai Santro

There is also a compressed natural gas version of the Santro. The 1.1-liter dual-fuel (petrol and CNG) engine produces 59 horsepower and 85 Newton meters of torque. There is a 5-speed manual gearbox attached to this engine. Having a fuel capacity of 60 liters, the vehicle achieves a fuel economy of 30.48 km/kg. The CNG model of the Santro is available for an ex-showroom price of Rs 5.86 lakhs to Rs 5.99 lakhs.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

Our next CNG vehicle is the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. A 1.2-liter engine gives it 68 horsepower and 95 Newton meters of torque. The Grand i10 Nios offers a manual transmission with 5 gears. However, the fuel economy is low at 18.5 km/kg, and the tank holds only 60 liters. Ex-showroom, prices start at Rs 6.70 lakhs and up to Rs 7.24 lakhs.

Hyundai Aura

As a last point, a compressed natural gas (CNG) version of the Hyundai Aura is also available. The 1.2-liter bi-fuel engine in the Aura generates 68 horsepower and 95 pound-feet of torque. A 5-speed manual gearbox is included. Aura CNG achieves an excellent efficiency of 28 km/kg. An impressive 65 liters of fuel can be stored. The Hyundai Aura can be purchased for a cool Rs 7.34 lakhs (before taxes and fees).
