Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Veloster N’s 275-horsepower and 260-pound-foot torque come from a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that drives the car’s front wheels. An eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is available as an upgrade from the standard six-speed manual, and its overboost feature temporarily boosts torque from 260 to 278 pound-feet. An N’s drive-mode selector gives you the option between Eco, Normal, Sport, and N. With the N Custom mode engaged, you can fine-tune the throttle response, adaptive dampers, limited-slip differential, engine rev matching, stability control, steering weight, and exhaust to your liking.

Turning most of those dials up to 11 while taming the dampers and the exhaust is particularly effective at balancing the N’s performance for commutes around southeastern Michigan. This was determined in the 2019 Veloster N that was part of our long-term fleet and had a manual transmission. The adaptive dampers in the N produce a firm and choppy ride, so we started leaving them in their softest default setting. According to our lab results, the Veloster N can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and can cover a quarter mile in 13.8 seconds at 102 mph. We have not yet put the new Veloster N automatic transmission through its paces, but our educated guess is that it will be slightly quicker than the manual.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

With a manual transmission, the Veloster N achieves 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The automatic version gets lower fuel economy estimates of 20/27. The latter was put through our rigorous testing regimen, including a spin on our 75 mph highway route, where it returned an impressive 30 mpg.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

When you open the Veloster’s peculiar three-door layout, you’ll find a plasticky, dark, and drab interior that belies the vehicle’s diminutive exterior dimensions. However, aside from the tight rear seats, it’s a pleasant ride overall, with well-organized and straightforward controls. Only the steering wheel and shift knob are upholstered in leather, and only LED shift lights can be found in the instrument cluster.

The new lightweight sport seats come illuminated with a logo and are heated as standard. There was room for four of our carry-on bags when the back seats were in use, and space for thirteen when they were folded flat. The hatchback opening is relatively narrow, and the lift-over height (the distance from the floor to the hatchback’s ledge) is 31.5 inches, so it’s not the most accessible vehicle.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Even without navigation, Hyundai’s standard 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system is simple to use. Although we have not had the opportunity to use the updated software, Hyundai claims it is ready for 2021. SiriusXM satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility, and an Infinity premium audio system with seven speakers and a subwoofer are all included as standard equipment.

In addition, the Hyundai Blue Link Connected Care and Remote package includes a Bluetooth hands-free phone system with voice recognition (Connected Care features in-vehicle service reminders and service scheduling, diagnostic alerts, and enhanced roadside assistance, while the Remote services include the ability to pre-warm or pre-cool the interior for up to 10 minutes before you get in and lock and unlock doors remotely.)
