Carlo Abarth, an Italian designer born in Austrian, established the Abarth firm in 1949. A new, highly successful racing car team was formed after the business bought the remaining assets of the racing team they managed, Cisitalia. Abarth gave up the reins of the company he founded in 1971 and sold it to Fiat. Almost immediately, Fiat repurposed the storied Italian marque into a racing subsidiary, and a slew of high-performance vehicles bearing the Abarth name appeared on the market. Innumerable Abarth variants of the first-generation Fiat 500 and 600 stand out among the most famous.
To compete with the Mini and the (Citroen) DS3, Fiat brought back the 500 nameplates in 2007 for a small, retro-styled hatchback. Simultaneously, Fiat was able to return to the North American market by purchasing the insolvent Chrysler brand from the Daimler group. In fact, the latest version of the Abarth 500 was introduced to the North American market in 2012 for the first time.
Overview Of The 500 Abarth
The Fiat 500 Abarth is an inexpensive and sporty five-door hatchback. Despite being sold by FCA in North America from 2012 through 2020, very few changes were made to the vehicle over that time. There’s no denying that the 500 Abarth’s striking appearance is its most striking feature. Despite being far larger than the original 500, the new model’s every aesthetic detail was carefully considered and implemented to pay homage to the classic while adding a contemporary twist.
The side profile, with its rounded headlights and vertical taillights, was inspired by the original 500 that became an instant classic in the 1960s. The 500 Abarth, like the original car that introduced this groundbreaking technology, is front-wheel drive and a front-mounted engine. After all, the original Fiat 500 is one of the most iconic examples of the front-wheel-drive configuration that is rapidly becoming the norm in the auto industry. The 500 Abarth was a well-liked option during its production run, rivalling such popular models as the Mini Cooper S and the Volkswagen Beetle Turbo.

Fiat 500 Abarth Price
You can’t find nearly this much amusement for so little cash very often. Used Abarth 500s are even cheaper than their already low new car prices. In the current market, vehicles with high mileage can be purchased for around $7,000, while the most costly vehicles with little mileage can be purchased for around $20,000. It’s reasonable to expect to pay $15,000 or less for a reliable, well-maintained, low-mileage manual-transmission example.

Fiat 500 Abarth Powertrain And Drivetrain
Even though other markets saw several tuned iterations of the 500 Abarth—including the 595 and 695—North America did not. There was only one configuration of the 500 Abarth available in North America. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine with Fiat’s cutting-edge Multiair variable valve timing technology displaces 1.4 litres and may be found under the hood.
The front wheels receive all of the 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque produced by the four-cylinder engine. Under seven seconds, the 500 Abarth can go from zero to sixty miles per hour, and it can reach a maximum speed of 127 miles per hour.
Both a five-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmitted the power to the front wheels. Unsurprisingly, most people choose the manual transmission. In terms of pure, unadulterated pleasure and grins per gallon, the 500 Abarth is hard to beat.
The engine has an unexpectedly awesome roar, the suspension is perfectly tuned, and driving it is pure bliss. The 500 Abarth is no slouch in the handling sense, despite being a basic FWD hatchback with relatively low power when compared to competitors.
Fiat 500 Abarth Comfort And Quality
To a large extent, the interior is the same as that of a standard Fiat 500. That means more throwback details, such as the three jewel-like buttons and the painted metal look dashboard.
Obviously, the Abarth version is distinguished by a few key upgrades. All the red stitching, new flat-bottomed steering wheel, improved sports seats, and most notably, a turbo boost indicator with an integrated shift light are all new additions.
The fact that it’s made by FCA may sway your opinion of the product’s quality. However, with consistent care, your 500 Abarth can last for years to come. Moreover, the owners recommend that you handle most of the work yourself if you have the necessary skills, and this is not surprising given the project’s simplicity. Maximum load capacity in the 500 Abarth is 30.2 cu. ft., and it can carry four adults comfortably.
