In 2019, the fourth-generation Santa Fe lineup got a facelift and a Plug-in Hybrid model. It came out in the U.S. as part of the MY2022 update for the SUV. The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid will be replaced by the 2023 model later this year, with only minor changes. Here’s what we know about the changes to the Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid that will be sold in the United States:

Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV Price

the starting price of the Santa Fe PHEV in the United States was around $40,000 USD. However, prices may differ in other countries. It’s best to check with your local Hyundai dealer for the most up-to-date pricing information.

Design & Features

The Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid for the U.S. market in 2023 is a “carry-over model,” which means that its design hasn’t changed much. It’s just a new model year with changes to the trims or models. As part of the MY2023 changes, Hyundai Motor America said it will stop making the SEL Convenience trim. The company currently sells the Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid in two versions: SEL Convenience and Limited.

Hyundai will give the 2023 Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid the ability to get map updates over the air (OTA). This is a big deal. The 2022 model doesn’t let you update maps over the air.

Specifications

The specifications for the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid are the same as for the current model. It has a 1.6-liter G4F III SmartStream gasoline direct injection turbocharged engine and a permanent magnet synchronous motor.

The engine makes 178 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, and the electric motor makes 66.9 kilowatts (90 horsepower) and 224 lb-ft of torque. Together, they add up to a total of 261 horsepower. The most powerful Santa Fe comes standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission and HTRAC AWD.

The 66.9 kW/224 lb-ft electric motor in the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid is powered by a 13.8 kWh (360V, 38.3 Ah) lithium-ion battery pack. This battery pack is cooled by water and is put in a waterproof structure under the floor. It should have the same EPA range of 31 miles for purely electric driving as the 2022 model. The combined fuel economy rating from the EPA may also be the same: 76 MPGe/33 MPG when using both gasoline and electricity (using only gasoline). It would help if you got a 120V charger that lets you charge at Level 1 for free with the purchase.

Production

Hyundai may have already started making the 2023 Santa Fe. Like the current model, the 2023 version would be shipped from one of the company’s five plants in Ulsan, South Korea, not from the local plant in Montgomery, which makes the 2023 Santa Fe and 2023 Santa Fe Hybrid for the United States (SOP: October 2022).

Price

If a new base model is released, the base 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in hybrid will likely cost more than USD 40,000. If not, the Limited trim with all the bells and whistles will probably cost a little more than USD 46,000. When the company gives us more information, we’ll add it to the section.

The Korean model costs more than the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which is its main rival and starts at USD 36,995. When it gets a new generation for the 2023 model year, however, the Japanese SUV is likely to cost a lot more.
