Both the standard-length Ford Expedition and the extended-length Expedition Max 2022 are the automaker’s largest and most flexible family haulers. Ford’s largest SUVs feature three rows of seating, a noteworthy 9300-pound maximum tow rating, and off-road capability, but they aren’t as easy to get in and out of as a minivan.

The Expedition has one of the most comfortable rides and spacious cabins in the large SUV class, though these features are shared by competitors. What’s New for 2022?

Ford refreshes the look of the Expedition for 2022, adding new features and options both inside and out. Along with obvious changes to its front end, the cabin inherits a fresh dashboard design that’s similar to the one seen inside the recently redesigned Ford F-150 pickup truck.

The Expedition’s interior has been updated with higher-quality materials, and the vehicle’s infotainment system has been upgraded with a standard 12.0-inch touchscreen and an available 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen. Ford’s premium Platinum model now comes standard with BlueCruise, the automaker’s hands-free highway driving technology.

The new Timberline model stands out from the crowd thanks to its raised ride height and massive 33-inch all-terrain tires. A new Stealth Performance package is available on the Limited trim and brings a more sinister appearance, a sport-tuned suspension, and a more powerful version of the twin-turbo V-6.

The 2022 Ford Expedition is a full-size SUV that can travel on the highway and off-road. It can also seat up to eight people. Cargo space is greatly increased in the longer Max variant of this spacious and adaptable vehicle.

2022 Ford Expedition Pricing

The base model 2022 Expedition is an XL with a regular length and rear-wheel drive. The destination fee is added to the MSRP of $51,080 set by the manufacturer.

A standard feature on the new Timberline, four-wheel drive costs about $2,000 more than all other models. Max models that are an extra two to three feet in length cost two to three times as much as the standard length versions. Unfortunately, there is no “Max” version of the Timberline.

Platinum is the top-of-the-line package for the 2022 Expedition and it begins at $76,765. Taking a Platinum Max with four-wheel drive and loading it up with all the bells and whistles could cost as much as $87k.

Detroit’s other major automaker, Chevrolet, offers a similar vehicle, the Tahoe, for around $50,000, and a longer version, the Suburban, for $52,400. The top Platinum trim of the Ford Expedition begins at $70.5K, while the GMC Yukon Denali begins at $51.6K more.

The Timberline is competitive with the Jeep Wagoneer in price, coming in at around $67,000. Although the Toyota Sequoia is a bit dated, you can get one for $50.5K. The base price of a significantly more modern Nissan Armada is $49,000.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Expedition is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 that is twin-turbocharged, mated to a quick-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission, and available with rear- or all-wheel drive. The base model produces 380 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, but the Limited model increases those figures to 400 hp and 480 lb-ft.

Timberline models and Limiteds with the Stealth Performance package have access to an even more powerful engine, which increases output to 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet. On the test track, the Timberline model accelerated to 60 miles per hour in just 5.1 seconds, which was 2.4 seconds faster than the V-8-powered Tahoe Z71.

An independent rear suspension is standard on every Expedition. While the passengers will appreciate the smooth ride, the driver will have to deal with clumsy handling and a lack of feedback from the steering wheel. While the longer Expedition Max has a towing capacity of 9000 pounds, the Expedition is rated to pull up to 9300 pounds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Heavy-duty trucks like these don’t do anything to help the environment. Ford advertises the Expedition’s EcoBoost engine (a twin-turbocharged V-6) as being more fuel-efficient than a V-8, but in practice, it falls short. The front-wheel-drive model gets 17/23 mpg city/highway, while the all-wheel-drive model gets 22 mpg city/highway. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Platinum trim of the Expedition has the most luxurious interior, with massaging front seats and rich leather upholstery. The third row of seats in either the standard Expedition or the long-wheelbase Expedition Max is comfortable for adults, unlike in many competitors.

The standard for the second row is a bench that seats three, but optional captain’s chairs are also available. Inside, you’ll find incomparable cubby space in the Max. Each vehicle has a power-folding third row that can be operated from the trunk or rear seats. The middle and rear seats collapse completely flat to create a flat loading surface.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A massive 12.0-inch touchscreen running Ford’s Sync4 infotainment system is standard on every Expedition. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces and can receive software updates over the air. In addition to the 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo and the rear seat entertainment system, there is also a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot. A 15.5-inch touchscreen is optional for the Expedition, and it is the same size as the one found in the battery-powered Mustang Mach-E, so there’s no need to feel cramped.
